As of January 1st 2010, The South Australian Government will impose a ban on plastic bags.
Environment minister Gail Gago has introduced legislation within state parliament for the ban, however supermarkets and takeaway shops will have until the 4th of may to comply with the new legislation.
During the four month phase in period shops still using lightweight plastic bags must also offer customers an "earth friendly" alternative. Australia has gone one step further than China, which stated this week that it would ban ultra-thin bags and force retailers to sell other types of carry bags.
